Have you ever heard of the “Doomsday Clock”? Apparently, it is the invention of a publication known as the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Established in 1947, each year the public is alerted to how close we are to the destruction of this world. Last year, the group set “the clock” at 100 seconds before midnight, the closest that the earth has ever been to obliteration. In the past, the group has taken into account such things as nuclear escalation, and health epidemics to edge us close to “the midnight hour”.
Mankind has long been trying to put a date on the end of time. Of course, predictions have come and gone in our world’s rearview mirror up until this point. The Bible, of course, states that “only the Father knows the day or the hour” (Matthew 24: 36).
I would agree that world events would seem to indicate that the end of time is closer than ever before, but as a Christian I certainly would not classify this as a “doomsday clock”. Rather, it’s an event that is cherished and looked forward to, as the end of time ushers in Jesus Christ and “the new heaven and new earth”, which are mentioned in the Book of Revelation.
My job as a believer is not to predict when the Lord will return for His Second Coming. Instead, my job is to ready myself for His return, and to assist others to do the same.
God gave this earth of ours an extra day this leap year (back on February 29)–how about using the extra day this year to pick up the Bible and read portions of Scripture which detail the end of time. The Book of Matthew chapters 24—25 and the Book of Revelation chapters 20—21 are great places to start. Happy Reading!!
